The head of Moor, the white stringcourse on the eyes, does not appear for the first time in 1821, on a seal of the King Pierre III known as the large one. The flag comprises 4 heads of Moor, surrounding a cross. This emblem was used during nearly one century, and it is only into 1387 that king Jean Ier returns to the seal to four stakes of these ancestors. It was preserved by its successors as long as the kingdom of Aragon lasted. In 1736, unloaded in Aléria a German baron who appears himself unduly of prestigious titles. This baron, Theodore de Neuhoff was made accompany in his triumphal functioning through Corsica, of a portrait where it appeared in behaviour of pageantry. With the bottom of this portrait one could see a blazon. In the center, one ecu square was surmounted by a royal crown, itself surmounted of a sphere. Inside the ecu, a head of Moor, turned towards the line of that which looks at it, carrying a stringcourse on the eyes, tied behind the head. It is with this “king of operetta” which reigned only six months, that one owes the presence of the head of Moor on the official flag of Corsica. The immense popularity of Theodore in Europe, will make that from now on, the head of Moor will be known whole Europe as the official symbol of the weapons of Corsica. It is with Pasquale Paoli that the flag with head of Moor became the official emblem of the Corsica nation. At the beginning of its “Généralat”, Paoli will keep the emblem chosen in January 1735, by the risen chiefs, of which his/her father, in the “Cunsulta” of Corte. The standard carried the image of the Virgin Mary. In 1761, a currency is struck with the weapons of Corsica. A cartouche locks up a head of Moor turned towards the left with a stringcourse on the face, tied behind the nape of the neck and a collar with two or three grains. Paoli with decided to raise the stringcourse which was placed on the eyes in the weapons of Theodore. Quoted by one of these biographers, Paoli would have exclaimed while saying: “The Corsicans want to see there clearly. Freedom must go to the torch of philosophy. It would not be said that we fear the light?.” These remarks are corroborated by Ambrogio Rossi. The general (Pasquale Paoli) had habit to say while laughing: “From now on the royal stringcourse is well placed as it is necessary and as it is appropriate for our dignity and not for our shame, like wanted it our enemies”.
Nowadays, uncontested emblem, it is this same banner which floats in the heart of all the Corsicans.
